Week 1 & 2 - Game Design

In the first two weeks, I mainly focused on refining all the gameplay design. I believe that there are still bugs and something uncertain in the game. I made a google document filled with our concerns and discussed with my groupmate. Here is the link:

We then started to refine the project proposal. It was quite hard since the game is full of uncertain. Here are some of the changes:

<--------
This is the map I drew in June. After refining, we would like to add more elements to the forest. For example, some food such as berries.
Moreover, I tried to brainstorm with something that players can craft inside the gameplay.

We change a lot of details in the gameplay also. I will explain it further in this blog.

Story:

Once upon a time, there were four little pigs. They were out in the forest, trying to build proper houses for themselves. However, one of them is not a pig, but a big bad wolf in disguise! He puts on a facade at day, only to reveal his bloody teeth at night. Oh god! Will the little piggies be able to catch a good night’s dream?

Game Objectives:

Pigs:
To survive and either 1. Kill the wolf with a spear or 2. Correctly identify the wolf by leaving mud marks on him.
Wolf: To fill his belly with 2 piggies.

Pigs:
To Survive and either 1.Repair the car to leave and escape or 2. the wolf dies
Wolf:
2 or more piggies are dead.

As we believe that it is too award to kill the wolf with the spear, we decide to add one more survival action as repairing the car and leave for the piggies to win. To build a car, piggies are required to craft several necessary parts such as wheels and electrical wires and go to the centre of the map, where the car building location is.

Crafting System:

In the first draft, the wolf can only pretend to be a pig in the daytime. However, I think that it does not make sense for the wolf to help the piggies to build houses or doing other things. So I decided that the wolf should find different ways to disturb the piggies by CRAFTING different things and STEALING from others. As a result, a rather complicated crafting menu is designed.

Character and Art Design:

After consulting with my friends, I designed to change the art style overall. I first think of using a cute and cartoony style as I believe that "the three little pigs" is a childish story. However, all of my friends suggest that it is unpleasant for an adult to play as a cutie piggie. And for the gameplay, it is not that simple for kids. So basically, the cute and cartoony art style wasn't a good fit for our game. Therefore, I designed to design things in a more weird and creepy way.

I would like to use this design (Left One) as it looks kinda weird and fun.

UI Design and Screenshot preview:

I redrew the screenshot in the new art style. Tools bar with items and a health bar is inserted too.

Presenting FYP proposal:

After all, we present the FYP proposal to our advisers and we gain some feedback on it. Here are the project proposal doc and presentation slide. You can click the icons to find out more details.
